How so ?

Back in 2003, while most of India was still figuring it out , Sikkim made organic farming a reality.

This wasn’t a marketing campaign. It was a paradigm shift in agriculture.

Here’s what stood out to me as someone building in agritech:
– They didn’t stop at banning chemical fertilisers.
– They backed farmers with training, plot-level certification, and real market access.

By 2015, over 75,000 hectares were certified organic and 66,000 families were on board.

What made it stick?
📍750+ agri officers were trained to guide farmers
📍Demo farms were operationalised so people could see before they believe
📍Compost units, collection centres, better roads and storage : because growing organic means little if you can’t move or sell it

The impact?
📍Yields went up, especially in pollinator-dependent crops
📍Farm incomes grew with premium pricing
📍Women gained new roles in value chains and agro-tourism
📍 And perhaps most importantly, SOIL BEGAN TO HEAL
